PAD Challenge - Day 29

From Robert Lee Brewer:

For today’s prompt, write a metric poem. Most of the world uses the metric system to measure things out; not so much in the States. But there are meters and liters, and the occasional millimeters. Also, poetry uses metrics (the study of meter in poetry). And metrics, in a general sense, can measure various things by a common denominator–even inches and/or teaspoons.

  1. Metric System

I’ve been told the metric system is easy
    Length is measured in meters
    Time is measured in seconds
While mass is measured in grams and
    Temperature in Celsius

Gallons, quarts and pints become liters
But they don’t measure quite the same
It may be easy enough for some
But I find it too confusing to learn
    Fahrenheit to Celsius?

    Five miles is 8.04672 meters
Now how much sense does that make
Hey! I ran 8.04672 meters today!
    Almost as crazy as changing
    Fahrenheit to Celsius!

Which by the way would make a lovely 70 degrees Fahrenheit
a chilly and very cold 21.111 degrees celsius!
Unless of course you grew up with Celsus
And knew they were the same… sigh.
I prefer to stick to Fahrenheit!

No the metric system is not for me
It muddles up my demented brain
And sends me into a tizzy! When comedian Paula Poundstone
Was asked asked why Americans don’t use metric?
She replied because we’re just too stupid!

  2. Fun poem, but I walk more than 8.04672 meters to the bathroom. That's about 25 feet, not 5 miles!! You need to move that decimal point to the right 3 places. You got it in kilometers! And you got a poem out. I don't know that I will for this one. I'm tryin' but nothing's coming. Sigh...

    1. I disagree with Paula Poundstone. If we were raised with the metric system like other countries we would be using it. Great poem.

    5. One tiny quibble. Don't tell us who Paula Poundstone is. This is a poem, not a term paper. The speaker here is a poor shlub talking to other poor shrubs. Let her assume that her readers know what she knows.

  3. Okay, short form again. A cinquain.

    Here's how
    to measure time.
Not in years, not in days,
not in minutes. Measure time in
    moments.

  4. My days pass faster
    each and every year.
    My time is metered out
    with each and every tear
    or giggle, passing time
    with laughter and with cheer.
