2018 PAD Challenge - Day 14, Report

From Robert Lee Brewer:

For today’s prompt, write a report poem. I know, I know: Writing a report sounds about as far away from poetry as flying is to a penguin, but many poems report on a moment or an instance or a scene. In your poem (or poems) today, report on something big and important or small and inconsequential (or small and important–or, well, you get the idea).

  1. Secrets slither down
    hallways concealed by doorways
    eclipsed by shadows.

    Her red lips, red hair
red dress, shimmer in dim light
    as the door opens.

    "Stop," she cautions, then
    views the intruder, smiles
    with invitation.

    Case of mistaken
    identity, so like him,
    she discerns too late

    it was not bright, door
    unlocked, unprotected. One
    can intrude unheard.

    "Pizza?" he inquired.
    Pepperoni, sausage. Smells
    waft across the room.

    Memories flood her
    senses, family dinners,
    Friday gatherings.

    "So like your father,"
she says, "thought you were a ghost
    come back to haunt me."

    "I battle that ghost
    each day." her visitor puts
    forth. "He's never gone."

    A good deal of time
has passed since their last meeting
    yet they do not touch.

    "You should, could, have warned,
    prepared my marrow for this
    abrupt reunion.

    Why now?" she laments,
purses her red lips, turns her
    red dress to the wall.

    She slumps, a spider
    luring prey, feels arms surround,
    capture completed.

    "Let's eat some pizza
before it gets cold. Then you
    must hear my report."

  3. It came a few times a year
that day we all dreaded to see
what would our report card say
would we get and A or B or C?

Ah, how we sweated that day
take our cards home for parents to see
what would they have to say
if you got an A or B or C?

Or maybe you got a D and would pray
your parents might go blind and not see
and wouldn't have anything to say
when you didn't get an A or B or C.

You promise to study hard - no horseplay
and bring up that grade - just wait and see
then forget about it until next report card day
did you get an A or B or C?

    1. Get a D and get grounded for a month...I always dreaded the report card. Good job on the poem! Great take off on the prompt!!

    2. Or you could do what Vinny did every year and "lose" his report card after the first marking period. They'd give him a new one onto which he'd forge Dad's signature, and fill out the old one himself for Mom and Dad to see. ... And I hate to admit it these days, but I love report card day. Sigh...

  4. many animals on our earth
    are destined for extinction
    their habitats are being destroyed
by humans who are taking over their homes

one such animal is the peaceful herbivore
the Sumatran elephant, who deposits seeds
    where ever they roam, contributing
to a healthy ecosystem for other species

    the slaughter of elephants
is usually for their ivory tusks
or for big game hunters seeking trophies.
there used to be thousands on the island

    between hunters and modern development
there are now about 2,000 left
many are being trained to "work"!
the land where they live grows smaller

this report is based on information
obtained in 2002. Many feel that camp life
and poor health is not beneficial
and the lives of the Sumatran elephant are...

    STILL THREATENED, BY HUMANS

    1. Yes, so sad. As a poem I find it a bit prosy, but considering we're doing one daily that doesn't leave much room to edit. LOL.

    2. Well said, my friend, and a sadder story there is none.

  5. this is so sad.... such a beautiful and magnificent animal destroyed because African men think the tusk has powers to give them bigger erections... sigh

  6. The Report

    The young lieutenant saluted
    "Report," his captain said,
"I am the last of my whole troop
    the others all are dead."

    "Our site was overtaken,
    it could not be defended,
I am the last," the young lad said
    "and my report is ended."

His grievous wound o'er took him
    "Alas," the captain said,
but the young lad did not hear him,
he fell to the floor stone dead.

"Oh woe to the callous generals
    with hearts so very cold
    who kept my troops maintaining
a position they could not hold.

"I can no longer do this."
He took his gun in hand
    and joined his young lieutenant
    in a better fairer land.

    The cold and callous generals
    were safely nowhere near
    when the loud report resounded
with no one there to hear.

    5. Thank you , one and all, I appreciat your kind comments. For some reason I was inspired by a line from an old poem "smiling the boy fell dead" it's from a poem by Robert Browning...one of my great favorites: Incident at the French Camp. Always loved his poetry. I've even read his novel in verse! The Ring and the Book.
