2018 PAD Challenge - Day 16, Favorite

From Robert Lee Brewer:

For today’s prompt, write a favorite poem. Maybe that sounds a bit silly, but what I mean is to write a poem about something that’s your favorite. A favorite teacher. Favorite movie. Favorite ice cream flavor. I don’t know, because I have my own list of favorites. Only you can do you … and your favorites. Who knows? Maybe this will end up being your favorite prompt this month.

  2. Secrets slither down
    hallways concealed by doorways
    eclipsed by shadows.

    Her red lips, red hair
red dress, shimmer in dim light
    as the door opens.

    "Stop," she cautions, then
    views the intruder, smiles
    with invitation.

    Case of mistaken
    identity, so like him,
    she discerns too late

    it was not bright, door
    unlocked, unprotected. One
    can intrude unheard.

    "Pizza?" he inquired.
    Pepperoni, sausage. Smells
    waft across the room.

    Memories flood her
    senses, family dinners,
    Friday gatherings.

    "So like your father,"
she says, "thought you were a ghost
    come back to haunt me."

    "I battle that ghost
    each day." her visitor puts
    forth. "He's never gone."

    A good deal of time
has passed since their last meeting
    yet they do not touch.

    "You should, could, have warned,
    prepared my marrow for this
    abrupt reunion.

    Why now?" she laments,
purses her red lips, turns her
    red dress to the wall.

    She slumps, a spider
    luring prey, feels arms surround,
    capture completed.

    "Let's eat some pizza
before it gets cold, but you
    must hear my report."

    Words tight, a coiled spring
    ready to release, trigger
    savage explosions.

    Deflects, takes a bite
    of pizza. "My favorite.
    But you always were."

  5. Leaves turn orange, yellow and red
a chill in the air makes you
    snuggle deeper into your blankets
scents from a wood burning stove fill the air

you put on jeans and a sweater
venture out into the crisp day
it teases with a hint of snow
    promises to come

    leaves crunch under your feet
    Jack-O-Lanterns adorn porches
later children will fill the streets
dressed as witches, goblins and super heroes

The word trick-or-treat will be sung
as their bags fill with candy and treats
tired but happy they will head home
to dream of all that candy to eat

even after the quiet sets in
    Jack-O-Lanterns lights put out
I feel the thrill of this special night
whisper to the ghosts Happy Halloween

  6. Favorites

So many favorites, how can I choose?
Favorite cooking tool, one I most use?
    Favorite memory, favorite shoes,
how to decide, oh how can I choose?

    I'll toss a coin—heads, tails to tell?
I'd better be sure I'd better choose well.
Favorite which? oh wait a spell,
the coin went missing, no tale to tell.

I just cannot choose, I'll be here all day.
    There isn't a favorite I can say
so every choice is any good way,
and I'll be content with that choice today.
