Songs that saved my life

"Music has charms to soothe a savage breast," spoken by Almeria in Act I, Scene 1 of The Mourning Bride came to mind when Paul Fowler sent me this prompt for this week. I know music has an emotional affect on me and can take me back in time reminding me of 'The Way We Were'. I hope everyone can find that music in their souls and write about a song that had a profound affect on them at some time in their life.

  1. I finally posted one on last week's too.

    Come gather 'round people
    wherever you roam...

    In the '60s
    the world changed,
    teens rose up, protested

    the Vietnam war.
    Week after week,
    many years.
We marched, and marched, and marched,
    and Bob Dylan sang,

    There’s a battle
    outside and
    it’s ragin’. It’ll soon
    shake your windows and
    rattle your doors…

    Now here we
    are again. Retirement
    settling in as I
    watch students lead
    the marches, try

    to end current horror
    the wheels still in spin
    as they speak out
    and demand
    gun control. Jennifer

    Hudson sings, Your sons
    and your daughters
    are beyond
    your command, for the times
    they are a-changin’!

    3. I remember when you tried to get me to listen to the words Bob Dylan was singing and I talked through the whole song. I did listen another time. Great poem!!!

  2. You must leave now, take what you need, you think will last
But whatever you wish to keep, you better grab it fast
Yonder stands your orphan with his gun
Crying like a fire in the sun
Look out the saints are comin' through
And it's all over now, baby blue...Bob Dylan

War rages on in foreign lands
    no one loves everyone hates
the dead come back in coffins dark
while the children sing songs of peace.

Soldiers hold tight to their families
    promise to return some day
bombs kill and maim body and soul
while the children sing songs of peace.

Young people now fight the wars
sacrifice so much so for us
do they know they will never be the same
while the children sing songs of peace?

    Buildings bombed in our homeland
shake us to our inner core
    bodies fall and innocence dies
while the children sing songs of peace.

Those left behind now stand alone
seek revenge for what they have lost
minds and souls are black with hate
while the children sing songs of peace.

The orphans tears in bullets rain
taking lives of those they fear
soon there will be nothing left
while the children sing songs of peace.

  3. hmmmm my promt, so i better do a good job.....here we go. just gotta say, i have more music than sense and the coolest harmonica ever ha ha.

    MUSIC - MY SAVIOUR

yeah, she cheated. so i put on the smiths
    and led zep's epic myths

the clash and crass always made more sense than holy books
i'd rather listen to the kooks
    ella's voice and saucy looks

mr sinatra. mr lennon. mr mc cartney. mr strummer changed my life
along with the king of course, who saved me from strife

when everything in my life starts heading south
and stupid things start gushing out of my mouth
there is still the blues harmonica
    and the eternal bar

yep! i can still hit the high notes
    and remember rolling stones quotes

    elvis has left the building.

" you have to be kidding me. they wouldn't do those unspeakable things! seems to me, that god and the devil, are just the same " - you have to be joking - the flaming lips.

thanks ladies and gentlemen. you've been a lovely audience - love - paul.

  4. The Good Bye Song

I can’t be someone I’m not to make you happy.
You can’t change yourself to suit my state of mind.
So I guess that it is best that it is over,
And I promise not to think that you’re unkind.

    Chorus:
‘Cause you’re you and I am me,
    And we really don’t agree,
But we had a lotta good times for a while.
Someday soon the hurt will go
And I still won’t miss you so,
When I think of you I’ll do it with a smile.

Oh we had times that I’ll remember when I’m happy,
There are things you said to me that I will keep,
And perhaps my face will come into your memory
Now and then at night before you go to sleep.

Chorus: But you’re you and I am me, etc.

Oh the world is wide and yet we found each other
And though now it seems the time has come to part
Yet our paths could someday, one day cross each other,
And ‘til then you’ll have a corner in my heart.

Chorus: ‘Cause you’re you and I am me, etc.

    1. nice song tash. it just needs a wailing harmonica and a harp in the background, with a backbeat - i usually become a chameleon in relationships....anything she wants to see. but that's just me - love and harps - paul.

    2. I discovered that when I gave away myself I grew progressively more unhappy. It is important for best results to be in a relationship where there is balance and the participants can be their true selves without fear of rejection.

    1. I am somewhat miffed that Paul was the only person to comment on my song and I always comment on everyone's faithfully. Humph Oh well. I'll survive. Just thought I'd mention it.

    2. I have been a bit busy, (painting my dojang and preparing for a visit from my instructor.) I find it strange that you're a bit miffed though, seeings how you didn't comment on my or Bonnie's poems.

    3. How crass of me. I don't know how I managed to do that. Usually tht's the first thing I do when I read a poem. (sigh) oh well, I'm far from perfect.

  6. this is a true story. a sort of day in the life, musical journey. my first visit to the opera in twenty years.

    A NIGHT AT THE OPERA

    can't find a date for " gon giovanni "
    good seats too
not behind a pillar, where you can't see
they have a bar and a loo

    the lovely charlotte's day off
to take out happy holly, i'd have to have read a book by nabikov
thanks to faulty trains, lispy fae's pizza shop shift was over
    my plans all going supernova

but i still have booze, smoke and mozart
    who always touched my heart

    yeah i was crying
and a lady asked me if i was all right
if i said i was, i'd be lying
    endless hours of trying
and still can't get a date for opera night.
